Paris Auto Show Preview: Chevrolet Spark Woody Art Car

Although the new Chevrolet Spark won't be arriving in America until late next year, it's already proving a major hit with fans across the Atlantic. To help promote this sprightly subcompact, Chevrolet Europe has commissioned several "Art Sparks" as one-off exercises in possibility thinking. The latest to turn up is this Spark Woody. Although set to make its formal debut at the Young? Creative? Chevrolet! arts competition, which takes place in Paris on the eve of the International Motor Show there next month, this neo-retro wavemaker broke cover early in Britain on the roads around Newquay, Cornwall, to kick off the Boardmasters surf, skate and music festival held there annually.

Unlike its historic predecessors, no actual trees were harmed in the process of creating this new-gen Spark Woody. The rather effective -- and far more aero-friendly -- look is rendered in a custom three-quarter vinyl wrap. As finishing touches, Spark Woody is adorned with a locally-produced mini-board set off by wide-whitewall tires on its alloy wheels.

Chevrolet began the Art Spark program last fall when the first one -- the work of German fashion designer Smeilinener -- made its debut at the final of the Young? Creative? Chevrolet! event in Berlin. Since then an Art Spark has appeared in unique livery at a World Touring Car Championship event and also been transformed into a Spark DJ Car which contained the world's largest record turntable. Later this month another Art Spark will make its debut at the Silverstone Circuit to coincide with the British Touring Car Championship race to be held there.
