2019 Nissan Maxima

Starting Price:  $34,845 | Price Yours

Above Average:  Powerful V6 engine, impressive ride and handling, long list of standard and optional amenities, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning standard

Below Average: Love it or hate it styling, small rear seat, front-wheel drive and a CVT transmission are not the chosen setup for most enthusiast drivers

Consensus: A legendary name that now feels more like a sporty premium luxury car rather than a BMW killer

The new Altima is probably Nissan’s best sedan to date, and with its available turbocharged engine, certainly gives the Maxima a run for its money. The Altima rides on an all-new platform that is longer than the outgoing model and even fractionally longer than the Maxima, giving it more interior room and trunks space. Both cars offer advanced driver assists like Intelligent Forward Collision Warning that can react to situations happening two cars ahead, but only the Altima offers Nissan’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system. The Maxima’s V6 is standard on every trim vs. the Altima’s 188 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. Both cars employ a CVT transmission, but only the Altima offers the option of all-wheel drive and an available variable-compression turbocharged engine.

Both cars offer good front seat headroom and legroom, but the Alitma offers about an inch more rear seat legroom. Headroom in the rear seat of both the Altima and Maxima isn’t as generous as in some competitors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are along for the ride, as are upscale options like a Bose audio system, navigation and adaptive cruise control. The Altima offers a 4-cylinder engine on all trim levels, meaning even the most luxurious Altima is going to cost less than a comparably equipped Maxima and get better fuel economy to boot. However, the Maxima does have features unique to it, such as a driver’s seat manual thigh extension and ventilated front seats.

Nissan Altima Advantages

Better fuel economy, available all-wheel drive, tighter turning radius, larger trunk and rear seat, less polarizing styling, lower price, ProPilot assist semi-autonomous driving system

Nissan Maxima Advantages

Powerful V6 standard, advanced electronic suspension and traction controls, sport driver’s seat with manual thigh extension, opulent interior, available ventilated front seats

Similarities

Both cars can be equipped with Nissan’s advanced Safety Shield 360 and both offer a sporty driving experience. Both come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offer a 360-degree camera system and 10 airbags including front knee and rear seat side-impact airbags.

Final Recommendation

Because of its lower price, newer design and good fuel economy, we’d go with the 2019 Altima. Those seeking more power can opt for the turbocharged model, while those dealing with winter weather conditions can order all-wheel drive. The Maxima does offer more horsepower and a nicer interior, but its styling is a love it or leave it proposition, and its entry-level pricing places it at the upper end of the Altima’s trim range.
