NHTSA names 74 vehicles to be rated in 2012 crash-testing program
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its final list of 2012 vehicles that will be evaluated under the agency's 5-Star Safety Rating program. The roster includes 42 passenger cars, 22 sport utility vehicles, eight pickup trucks and two vans. According to NHTSA, that sample will provide consumers with safety information on approximately 81 percent of all 2012-model-year passenger vehicles and 92 percent of the entire fleet. The agency does not plan to retest any carryover 2011 models that have already been rated using its new and more stringent 5-Star criteria that was adopted last year.
"Our 5-star ratings program is a critical resource to help consumers make the best possible decisions about the cars they want to buy," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "By revamping the tests and creating a more rigorous program last year, we raised the bar on safety for all vehicle manufacturers. People should remember: More stars, safer cars."
In addition to issuing its basic safety ratings, NHTSA also provides buyers with recommendations on vehicles equipped with various crash-avoidance technologies. For 2012, it has recognized 68 models equipped with either lane-departure warning and/or forward-collision warning systems that also will be evaluated. Those findings along with the results of the comprehensive 5-Star testing will be posted online at www.safercars.com.
The following is a complete list of the 2012 vehicles that NHTSA will subject to its 5-Star safety regimen, broken out by manufacturer names.
