General Motors has launched a contest to help determine what it will call the "signature" exterior color of the new Chevrolet Volt when the car goes on sale late next year. GM describes the paint -- which will be exclusive to the Volt -- as "silver with an emerald hue," and is asking the public to suggest a fitting name that will round out an exterior palette that already includes Black, Silver Ice Metallic, Cyber Gray Metallic, Crystal Red Metallic and a premium White Diamond Tri-Coat. Full details regarding the competition can be found at chevroletvoltage.com, but the basics call for entries to be accepted from now until the morning of November 4, at which time a team at Chevy will pick three finalists. According to Maria Rohrer, director of global Volt and global marketing operations at Chevrolet, the choices will be "based equally on originality, creativity, and the ability to capture the innovation and spirit of the Volt." From November 16 to December 1, the public will be asked to vote on which one it likes best -- and while competitors can offer multiple names, each online voter will only be allowed to cast a single electronic ballot. As for prizes, GM plans to give all three finalists and one guest each roundtrip airfares to Los Angeles, two nights of hotel accommodations, a $400 gift card and admission to the L.A. Auto Show on December 2, 2009, one day after the winning name will be made public. In addition the lifelong distinction of having come up with the Volt's most distinctive "primary" color, the winner also will have a chance to test drive a preproduction version of the vehicle.
