Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S teased
While remaining coy about details, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation said it will unveil the Outlander PHEV Concept-S next month at the Paris Auto Show. All we know for certain is that the Concept S is being proposed as a special "Sporty and Sophisticated" package for the existing production plug-in hybrid vehicle and that it will offer "a refined interior and exterior design that magnifies the Outlander PHEV's unique driving experience." We'll just have to wait to see whether any of these bold visual touches of Concept-S influence the look of the next-generation Outlander.
Presently on sale in Europe and Japan, the current Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is due to go on sale here next year. Its all-wheel drive system consists of a 2.0-liter/119-horsepower 4-cylinder engine/generator coupled with two electric motors, one at each axle. Energized by a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack, each motor develops 80.5 horses and is integrated into Mitsubishi's S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system. The Outlander PHEV can operate in three driving modes: pure EV, series hybrid where the motors provide motive force and the engine generates an electric charge on the fly and parallel hybrid where the engine is the prime drive element while the motors supply additional assist as required.
