The slick-looking Mazda Minagi Concept made its first U.S. appearance in New York, accompanied by the confirmation that a production version of this slick-looking five-passenger compact SUV will go on sale here sometime in 2012 as a replacement for the current Mazda Tribute and carrying a CX-5 model designation.

In addition to displaying the automaker's new "Kodo-Soul of Motion" design language, the Minagi Concept represents a further development of the overall SKYACTIV technology suite. Its SKYACTIV-Body structure offers enhanced strength and rigidity while trimming total mass by eight percent compared to today's alternatives and its optimized SKYACTIV-Chassis design is some 14 percent lighter yet still provides exceptional handling and control.

Mazda offered no specific details on pricing or equipment for the upcoming CX-5, which is scheduled to make its production-form debut this fall in Frankfurt. Likely to debut here as a 2013 model, it's expected to showcase a full measure of SKYACTIV innovations.
