Lexus LF-C2 Concept shows the look of tomorrow

By Bob Nagy on November 20, 2014 9:18 AM

Making its global debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Lexus LF-C2 Concept is "an exciting what if" that offers a tantalizing peek at what we can expect from the luxury division in the near future. While speculation continues that it's a thinly disguised precursor to a Convertible version of the Lexus RC Coupe - an argument one can easily make after comparing its virtually identical external dimensions -- Lexus group vice president and general manager, Jeff Bracken, says this 2+2 roadster study represents considerably more. He indicates the LF-C2 Concept reflects "what's in store for our brand's future design direction" - a statement that pertains not only to the firm's commitment to more dynamic visual themes but to delivering exceptional driving experiences.

Given the dearth of mechanical information presented at the reveal of this one-off proof of that latter contention will have to wait. What we do know for sure is the LF-2C Concept definitely embodies an edgier take on the automaker's current thinking. The car's searing golden-yellow finish is the result of a special multi-layering technique and its unique recasting of the signature spindle grille uses a new braided-mesh insert that like the car's paint, changes character when viewed from different angles and lighting conditions. The LF-2C's bold front fascia also features triangular LED headlamps along with vents for brake cooling and to help manage airflow through the body for enhanced high-speed stability. A steeply raked A-pillar and distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels punctuate the LF-2C's wedge-like profile while subtle side-sill intakes help reduce temps in its rear stoppers. Rounding out the look of this could-be Lexus are prominent L-shaped taillamps set off by bright-finish dual-paired stacked exhaust outlets and a functional diffuser.

The LF-2C Concept's well-appointed cabin integrates contemporary flair with traditional luxury. White and gray leather, LED accent lights and loads of soft-touch surfaces meld seamlessly with its thick-rimmed multifunction steering wheel and supportive sport seats. The dash design and instrument cluster also match fashion with function and work in concert with a large video screen controlled by a Remote Touchpad located on the car's full-length center console. We'll just have to wait to see how much of the LF-2C's "what if" thinking ultimately makes it into the showroom - and whether this cool concept really does turn out to be a forerunner of a Lexus RC Convertible...
