• Concept tests open-top version of LC Coupe
  • No word on production, yet
  • Current 2019 LC Coupe priced from $92,200

Lexus is testing the waters on a possible open top version of its flagship LC Coupe. The Lexus LC Convertible Concept was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and it shows that a very sleek coupe can also be a tantalizing convertible.

“This concept takes the unmistakable design of the LC coupe and reimagines it as a future convertible,” said Tadao Mori, Chief Designer of the LC Convertible concept. “It blends all the best aspects of the original coupe with the dynamic design of an open-air convertible.”

While it shares the lines of its coupe counterpart, the rear of the car takes on its own identity thanks to a slightly higher belt line and a hard tonneau cover that houses the power retractable top. While the official line is that the vehicle is a concept and there is no top, we can assume by the relatively low height of the rear deck that a neater-folding soft top would be favored over a bulkier retractable hardtop. The cover itself has twin fairings that nestle up to the tops of the rear “plus two” seating perches. The rear deck itself is slightly taller and flatter than the coupe’s to accommodate the top.

V8 and hybrid power

Sharing the same dimensions as the coupe, the convertible rides on a 113.0-inch wheelbase and measures 187.8 inches overall and 75.6 inches wide. It’s likely a production version of the Lexus LC Coupe concept would share the same powertrains, which includes the LC 500’s 5.0-liter V8, which makes 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque delivered to the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. The LC 500h boasts a 3.5-liter V6 combined with an electric motor that provides a total system output of 354 horsepower. The LC 500 is capable of 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph, while the LC 500h sprints to 60 in 4.7 seconds and tops out at 155 mph.

The cabin retains the same alluring design of the coupe, with tailored leather upholstered seats to the flowing layout of the dash that houses a large center display screen and high end interior accents. If the Lexus LC Convertible is given the green light, expect pricing to flirt with $100,000 since the base 2019 LC 500 Coupe starts at $92,200 and the LC 500h begins at $96,710.
