LA World Premiere: Honda FC Sport Fuel Cell Concept
By KBB.com Editors on September 21, 2009 7:56 AMCritics complain hydrogen is not a viable fuel source for cars. It's expensive, there's no refueling infrastructure in place and most Americans still equate the gas with things that go "boom" in the night. At the same time, it's tough to bet against Honda on such matters, and right now they're blazing a trail in hydrogen fuel cell technology. Its latest contribution is Honda FC Sport concept. The FC Sport shows us nothing new in the area of technology, using the same fuel cell stack that powers the FCX Clarity sedan (available for lease in parts of Southern California), but it does hint at the future of Honda design and also brings performance into the fuel cell conversation. The fuel cell stack and electric motor's placement is integral to the three-seat coupe's handling abilities. Placed low and in between the front and rear axles, the powertrain helps contributes to the FC Sport's low center of gravity. The design also allows for a relatively large passenger compartment with a center-set driver's seat flanked by two rear seats. A large canopy top opens from the rear to allow entry and exit.
