2019 Kia Stinger

Starting Price: $34,115 | Price Yours

Above Average: Excellent, precise steering; unbeatable warranty; plenty of power; great suspension, strong performance

Below Average: New model, so resale value is yet to be determined; entry-level model is well priced, but prices escalate quickly

Consensus: With the 2019 Stinger, Kia has a true sport sedan, from its fantastic-sounding and powerful turbocharged engine to its excellent and responsive steering and a chassis that’s tight but doesn’t make you feel every bump in the road. The Stinger’s liftback design also makes it practical for carrying plenty of cargo. It comes at a very competitive starting price but moves quickly into Audi and BMW territory once you move up to a bigger engine and add options like all-wheel drive.

2019 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

Starting Price: $45,595 | Price Yours

Above Average: Excellent blend of performance and space

Below Average: Options cause price to escalate quickly

Consensus: The 2019 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is the more practical version of the 3 Series line, with four doors, a longer roof (making for better rear-seat headroom) and a hatchback instead of a trunk. It combines smooth driving manners with excellent use of space, making it a true grand tourer.

The 2019 Kia Stinger and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are members in what is a relatively new category: the liftback sport sedan. BMW has been a leader in the sport sedan category for decades, but Kia has brought a very competitive new player to the category with the Stinger, which offers throaty engines, superlative steering, and an excellent suspension that is both fun in the curves but not so tight that you feel every bump. With their liftback designs, both sedans offer excellent cargo capacity, particularly with the seats folded down. While each comes with a powerful turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, either can be upgraded to an even stronger turbocharged 6-cylinder for even more power. But in both cases, options add up and what may seem like a bargain can quickly balloon into the mid five figures.

Similarities

Liftback design; both offer an optional 6-cylinder engine; comparable power and torque; both are offered with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive; options cause prices to increase quickly

Kia Stinger Advantages

Great warranty; phenomenal steering and excellent suspension; much lower entry-level price

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Advantages

Optional 6-speed manual transmission; better fuel economy, including 34 mpg highway; great 8-speed automatic transmission

Final Recommendation

While both of these cars are a good choice for a grand tourer, with space for five and good road manners, we need to give the nod to the Stinger. From its engine growl to its adjustments for both suspension and steering to its handling and sharp looks, it is a complete sport sedan, able to both carve corners and absorb bumps in the road. Plus, if you’re not concerned about brand names, its entry-level model comes in nearly $10 grand lower than the 4 Series. And yes, while it’s a new model we can’t fully project resale or long-term reliability, we feel that Kia’s legendary warranty should offset many of these concerns.
