2019 Kia Sorento

Starting Price: $26,980 | Price Yours

Above Average: More inexpensive than many in its size class; optional V6; automatic braking with pedestrian detection

Below Average: Smaller than average for its class; 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity; a bit cramped in the third row

Consensus: In the midsize crossover class, the Kia Sorento differentiates itself by being a bit smaller than competitors, but also less expensive. It’s no longer offered with a 2-row configuration, and the third row is only good for kids or shorter trips. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is respectable, but if you’re doing any driving in higher elevations or with full loads, we recommend the optional V6.

2019 Nissan Rogue

Starting Price: $25,845 | Price Yours

Above Average: Optional hybrid; excellent use of space in a small package; EZ Flex system allows all seats but driver to fold flat for large objects

Below Average: Not a lot of power; not the best choice off road; middling resale value

Consensus: The Nissan Rogue is a sporty midsize SUV that is in many ways the perfect size: It’s small on the outside and easy to park, but it’s comfortable and roomy on the inside, with excellent use of space. It’s not the most powerful in its class, or much of an off-roader, but it’s stylish and sporty, and there’s an optional hybrid model that has some nice low-end power.

In the midsize SUV class, there is a wide range, from the extremely sporty to some top-level off-roaders to good, practical city dwellers like these two. They do a lot of things well, with plenty of features at a low price point, excellent use of space for storage, and decent around-town power. It is here where they diverge, however. The Sorento definitely has more power, and even comes with an optional V6, while the Rogue has superior gas mileage, and has a hybrid option. Both come with plenty of safety features as well, including some useful tech such as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. While not crazy sporty, they both have nice style, comfort, and good driving manners.

Similarities

Neither is the best choice off road; there are sportier, quicker options; both offer clever storage space and plenty of tech, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Kia Sorento Advantages

3-row, 7-passenger seating; optional V6; longer standard warranty

Nissan Rogue Advantages

Optional hybrid variant; nicer interior

Final Recommendation

While we like the Rogue and its commendable use of space and fuel economy, the tip of the hat goes to the Sorento in this case. It’s got a nice, punchy base engine, and an optional V6 if you want even more power for mountain roads and a full load. And while it may not be too practical for long trips, the third row is a good option to have, and can always be folded for more cargo space. Plus, it holds its value a bit better, and it’s hard to beat that Kia warranty.
