2019 Kia Niro Hybrid

Starting Price: $24,430 | Price Yours

Above Average: Stylish good looks, ample space in the 5-passenger cabin and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. All trim levels come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Below Average: Competitors like the Toyota Prius get better fuel economy and come with standard safety equipment. No all-wheel drive.

Consensus: The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid is a good-looking vehicle if you want something that doesn’t scream hybrid and has the functionality of a small hatchback or SUV.

2018 Toyota Prius

Starting Price: $24,395 | Price Yours

Above Average: Affordable, great fuel economy, the highest safety ratings, and a stellar reputation for reliability and resale. The 2018 Toyota Prius also has one of the lowest 5-year cost-to-own in the industry.

Below Average: You’ll see it everywhere, and the design is not exactly appealing to everyone. The Prius is also a bit laggy and offers less backseat room compared to others in the segment.

Consensus: The 2018 Toyota Prius is still America’s best-selling hybrid that gets industry leading fuel economy.

The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid is a nimble hybrid with enough room for 5. It accelerates quickly and has a few optional drive modes including Sport that improves the 6-speed automatic’s shift points, gives more feel to the throttle, and firms up the steering.  The motor and engine pairing in the Kia Niro Hybrid is so good that it’s hard to remember that you are driving a hybrid. Inside the Niro has a clean design with a variety of high-quality materials and very comfortable seats. We recommend the Niro LX because it offers keyless entry, push-button start, UVO3 infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, and 7-inch touchscreen. The 2018 Toyota Prius however, is ubiquitous, but for good reason. It still gets the best fuel economy in the segment (EPA estimates it at 52 mpg combined city/highway in the base version and 56 mpg combined city/highway in the Eco version) and Toyota still has a stellar reputation for safety and reliability. Because the 2018 Toyota Prius is everywhere, resale is also very strong. The 2018 Toyota Prius gets minimal updates including an 11.6-inch display that comes standard in the top line Prius Four and Prius Four Touring. Don’t fool yourself though, the Prius is no sports car and does 0-60 in 10 seconds. While it’s got some surprisingly sporty handling dynamics, and has become more stable feeling in its newest version—especially in high winds, it’s still a Prius and the updated look can turn some people off. The 2018 Toyota Prius does not come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Similarities

Kia Niro Advantages

Toyota Prius Advantages

Final Recommendation

It’s a true toss-up between these two vehicles. If you want something that doesn’t scream hybrid and gets connectivity for your phone, go for the Kia Niro Hybrid. If you are looking to be part of the pack, and don’t care about connectivity, choose the Toyota Prius.
