Totally redesigned for 2017

The new 2017 Jeep Compass is not the old 2017 Jeep Compass, and the new one does much more than clear the low bar of being better than its predecessor. An all-new vehicle built on the same basic underpinnings as the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Cherokee, the new Compass features a new engine, significantly upgraded interior and much better features. With only 180 horsepower the Compass won't win many drag races, but it is available with a rare combination of a manual transmission and 4-wheel drive, and not just on the base model.

Driving It

From our full review of the all-new Jeep Compass: "...offers the on-road quiet and comfortable ride of the Cherokee, but around town and in parking lots it feels more like the smaller and more nimble Renegade. The slow-shifting 9-speed automatic hampers power delivery from the 180-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, and we shut off the intrusive start/stop system. When the road turns, the Compass isn't as nimble as competitors like the Kia Sportage or even the Subaru Crosstrek. However, nothing can touch the Compass Trailhawk off road, thanks to its raised ride height, more rugged tires (including a full-size spare), skidplates, a special crawl mode that locks the transmission in first gear, an additional Rock mode in the 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system, and more."

2007-2017 Jeep Compass (First Generation)

Jeep Compass First Generation

The Jeep Compass debuted for the 2007 model year alongside the Jeep Patriot as smaller, more fuel-efficient alternatives for shoppers that didn't need all the rugged grunt offered by the Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Liberty. Although it received a significant facelift and updates for 2011, the Compass lived on the same foundation from 2007 until its 2017 redesign.

Key Changes/Improvements: This is the older of the two different 2017 Jeep Compass models, which was simply a carryover from the 2016 model year with no meaningful changes.

Key Changes/Improvements: The 2016 Compass lineup adds a Sport SE Package, consisting mainly of fancier trim and some minor convenience items. Added standard equipment includes Uconnect hands-free and SiriusXM Radio, and automatic headlights on the Latitude trim. Mojave Sand is a new color.

Key Changes/Improvements: Little has changed as the 2015 Jeep Compass carries over for another year. A dome light replaces the removable flashlight, a new green paint color is available, and navigation joins the options list for mid-trim Latitude models.

Key Changes/Improvements: The Compass receives an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission, but only on the front-drive and 4x4 Freedom Drive I models. More tweaks to the interior and exterior help somewhat, as do new safety features like standard front seat side airbags and an available rear backup camera.

Key Changes/Improvements: When equipped with the 2.0-liter engine and 5-speed manual, the 2013 Jeep Compass compact SUV earns 30-mpg highway.

Key Changes/Improvements: After receiving a full menu of aggressive updates in 2011, there's little that's new for the 2012 Jeep Compass.

Key Changes/Improvements: The Compass has undergone a significant facelift for 2011, coming out looking more like its Grand Cherokee big brother. Exterior and interior improvements are perhaps the most important changes, but they're not the only notable upgrades. The 2011 Jeep Compass is also the first to offer Jeep's Freedom Drive II Off-Road package, earning Jeep's Trail Rated badge and delivering off-road capabilities that are surprising in such a vehicle.

Key Changes/Improvements: For 2010, a five speed manual transmission is now standard on all models, while safety improvements include the addition of front seat active head restraints.

Key Changes/Improvements: The 2009 Jeep Compass gets an interior makeover sporting a new dash, soft touch materials on the doors and center console and more sound insulation around the engine and interior floor.

Key Changes/Improvements: All models receive standard air conditioning, chrome lock knobs and a tire pressure monitoring system. The CVT2 automatic transmission is fitted with AutoStick manual-shift mode and the Limited trim now offers navigation.

Key Changes/Improvements: The 2007 Jeep Compass is an all-new addition to the Jeep lineup.
