Providing a first look at where the automaker plans to take the next generation of its full-size QX80 SUV which is expected to get a full redesign in 2018, the Infiniti QX80 Monograph Concept made its global debut at the New York Auto Show. Styled at the Infiniti design studio in Atsugi, Japan, this well-crafted one-off reflects “the ultimate expression of futuristic luxury SUV design” and indicates how the upcoming QX80 “could evolve,” according to Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti Motor Company Ltd.

Infiniti defines a Monograph as a focused examination of a singular theme, in this case, one that passed on any mention of powertrain or cabin configuration to solely explore exterior design. The first vehicle to carry such nomenclature, the QX80 Monograph “hints at” a forward-looking take on brand’s latest design language that uses an artfully sculpted mix of geometric forms and organic shapes that “combine power with elegance.” To that end, the more aggressively contoured face of the Monograph Concept features an even bolder take on Infiniti’s signature double-arch grille, flanked here by new elegantly rendered slim-line LED headlamps that offer their own more contemporary take on the lighting theme. That same aesthetic influences the Monograph Concept’s similarly slender rear lighting units which also embrace individual “piano key” elements.

The profile view of the QX80 Monograph presents a previously unseen level of visual sophistication helped in no small part by its show-car-style side-view cameras, aero-enhancing fender strakes, integrated running boards and a more stylized D-pillar treatment. Blacked-out A-pillars that sit flush with the windshield and door glass are joined by pop-out door handles, all of which contribute to a tidier appearance while helping reduce drag and wind noise. A frosted-effect paint finish pioneered on earlier Infiniti show vehicles provides an interesting textural counterpoint to the QX80 Monograph’s other exterior details, notably its massive 24-inch alloy wheels. Rendered in chromium black with contrasting brushed copper elements, their outer edges are designed to overlap the equally healthy 235/45 tires creating the illusion of a 26-inch fitment.

“Earlier Infiniti show cars have started conversations with our customers, which gives us the chance to talk about the brand’s future direction,” noted Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President, Global Design at the reveal. “We have listened to our customers to discover their expectations for a large SUV from Infiniti in 2017 and beyond. The QX80 Monograph illustrates how Infiniti’s ‘powerful elegance’ design language could be used to develop our luxury SUVs in future.”
