2018 Ford Escape

Starting Price: $24,935 | Price yours

Above Average: Sporty handling, numerous high-tech features, excellent SYNC 3 infotainment, choice of turbocharged engines

Below Average: Aging platform, small interior and cargo area, so-so reliability and resale figures

Consensus: An established sporty compact crossover with a wide array of engines, options and connectivity upgrades

The 2018 Honda CR-V remains a favorite for a number of reasons. It’s priced right, offers a roomy interior and cargo area, sips gas and earns top marks for its crash test results and resale values. So good is the CR-V that it won KBB’s Small SUV Best Buy of 2018 award. The 2018 Ford Escape delivers a sporty ride, three engine options including two turbocharged engines and such upscale features as automated park assist and a panoramic moonroof. However, the Escape’s aging platform can’t deliver the smooth ride and quite interior of the CR-V, nor can it match the Honda’s roomy interior dimensions or superior fuel economy figures. The Escape can, however, be equipped to tow up to 3,500 pounds, 2,000 more than the CR-V.

Honda CR-V Advantages

Newer design, smooth ride, quiet interior, available road departure mitigation, larger rear seat and cargo area

Ford Escape Advantages

High-output turbocharged engine option, numerous high-tech safety and convenience features, sporty handling, higher tow rating

Final Recommendation

The CR-V is a win-win proposition, offering a nearly unbeatable combination of price, value, features and fuel economy. The Ford Escape isn’t as roomy, quiet or modern, but it is quicker, offers better handling and more upscale options. However, when it comes to resale, the CR-V holds its value better than the Ford Escape.
