2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Starting Price: $41,425 | Price Yours
Above Average: S-Class styling, potent standard engine, advanced electronic features
Below Average: High base price, only one engine choice, some advanced driver assists optional
Consensus: A premium brand compact sedan with cutting edge technology, brilliant performance and a storied name.
The newest entry to the premium compact car market is the Genesis G70. The G70’s aggressive exterior and feature-rich interior follow the same tack as parent company Hyundai’s model line: offer lots of features, power and style at a price that undercuts the competition by thousands of dollars. The G70’s standard engine provides good power and fuel economy, but its optional turbo V6 is the powerplant to lust after, turning the G70 into a bona fide autobahn burner. With its impressive standard and optional equipment list and 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, the G70 delivers everything most competitors have, but for a lot less money. The only thing missing is the premium brand name.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is also an impressive performer, although for now it lacks a more powerful engine option beyond its standard turbocharged 4-cylinder. Still, the C-Class delivers luxury and performance on a grand scale, with litany of advanced electronic upgrades including a fully digital instrument cluster, touch-sensitive steering wheel controls and extensive driver assist systems. The S-Class-like list of optional equipment is impressive for sure, but opting for these selections will push the C-Class’ price well beyond that of a loaded Genesis G70.
Genesis G70 Advantages
The G70 offers an impressive list of standard features teamed with exhilarating performance at a price that undercuts just about every car in this segment. A long warranty and optional turbocharged V6 are two more enticing features, as is the handsome interior and available 6-speed manual transmission.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Advantages
For some, the Mercedes-Benz name is reason enough to buy, but the current C-Class really is a cut above other generations to carry the name. It offers more luxury features and more advanced electronics than the G70, plus it has more rear seat legroom and a larger trunk. The C-Class also comes in coupe and convertible form.
Both cars come with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, can be equipped with all-wheel drive and offer a long list of luxury upgrades. Both cars offer standout styling and impressive performance, and both earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
If you’re looking for most bang for the buck, the Genesis G70 offers a full compliment of features and performance in a sporty sedan the tops out around $53,000. However, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers a more respected name, more advanced electronics and a more established dealer network. The C-Class is near the head of its class among compact luxury sedans, whereas the G70 is a new arrival.
