First Look: 2010 Maserati GranCabrio

Maserati is expanding its lineup for 2010 with its first-ever four-seat convertible, the new GranCabrio. Set for a formal debut in mid-September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Italian automaker has provided an early look and the briefest of tech briefs of this elegant new drop-top which will join the GranTurismo Coupe and Quattroporte Sedan. Due to arrive here in the spring, the new GranCabrio will share the same basic platform architecture, interior design elements and 4.7-liter/433-horsepower V8 as the existing GranTurismo S model. While not stated, we expect this potent engine will be backed by a standard ZF six-speed/paddle-shifted automatic transmission.

Like the GranTurismo, the GranCabrio's relatively long wheelbase will afford rear-seat passengers a level of comfort that Maserati claims will ensure that they "are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars of the journey." In keeping with Maserati tradition, the Pininfarina-designed GranCabrio will be crowned by a fully-lined power top made from canvas not metal, as are many of those found on its upscale contemporaries. Although Maserati provided no pricing information with its initial press release, the GranCabrio is likely to start somewhere in the $140,000-$150,000 range.
