A couple years ago VW and BMW introduced two new transmissions, each aimed at combining the performance of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic. VW's DSG (Audi's S tronic) six-speed double-clutch gearbox is now revered, while BMW's SMG sequential manual gearbox became reviled (and now, defunct). BMW has announced that their new seven-speed, dual-clutch, DSG-like transmission -- one "conceived and developed for a high-speed power unit" -- will make its debut on all versions ( sedan, coupe and convertible) of the new M3 in early 2008.
