2019 Chevrolet Traverse

Starting Price: $30,925 | Price yours

Above Average: Three row seating for as many as 8 people, much improved looks over previous generation, decent fuel economy, tons of optional family-friendly features.

Below Average: Max tow capacity of just 5000 pounds, if you want to step up to the top trim and get features like adaptive cruise control it will cost you a pretty penny

Consensus: The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse has dropped 350-pounds, gained a ton of useable passenger and cargo space inside and hustles a bit faster than the previous generation.

2019 Subaru Ascent

Starting Price: $32,970 | Price yours

Above Average: Upscale, roomy enough for 8 people, tech loaded and sportier than most midsize SUVs.

Below Average: Only one engine option and no hybrid.

Consensus: The 2019 Subaru Ascent has pretty much everything you could want including, comfort, safety, practicality and sportiness.  If you only need to use the third row for tiny humans, it’s a great buy.

The Chevrolet Traverse is the largest 3-row crossover in the automakers line-up and it gets just a light refresh for 2019, following its more substantial makeover in 2018. That remake brought more space, less weight, and more power thanks to the peppy 3.6L V6 engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission that never hunts for the right gear. Chevy has cleverly added some hidden storage beneath the infotainment screen and upped its interior game with a sliding second row seat that makes getting to the third row that much easier. If you yanked the badges off the interior you might think you were in a higher priced vehicle.

While you can get the Traverse in a FWD version as well as AWD (for a price), the 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with AWD in all trims. Its Subaru’s first foray into the 3-row melee and they’ve got the right recipe: A combination of sportiness thanks to the 260 horsepower 4-cylinder engine, comfort, safety (EyeSight comes standard), and versatility. While the lack of variety of engines leaves something to be desired it’s still a decent bet for the price.

Three-row midsize SUVs packed with plenty of creature comforts to make the longest haul pleasant, they both have a maximum tow rating of 5000 pounds and come with available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Chevrolet Traverse Advantages

A range of engines and trim levels can get you pretty much anything you want for this 3-row crossover SUV.

Subaru Ascent Advantages

USB ports for every row and 19 (19!) cup holders make the cabin of the Subaru a very comfortable place to be.

Final Recommendation

The Chevrolet Traverse is our pick in this head-to-head. It’s combination of tech features, upscale interior, clever storage, spacious cabin and family friendly features make it a good buy.
