Chevrolet Spark EV confirmed for 2013 U.S. market launch
We already knew that Chevrolet would be broadening its lineup in 2012 with the introduction of the new Spark minicar. Now, the automaker has announced it will add an electric-powered version of the five-door hatchback that will go on sale here starting in 2013. Among the few details that have been released about the new Spark EV is that it will use an advanced nanosulfate lithium-ion battery pack supplied by A123 Systems and be sold in various countries around the world as well as in select areas of the United States, including California. Still to come are answers to questions regarding the car's range, charging times and likely pricepoint.
"The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option," said Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet. "It complements Chevrolet's growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology." Federico indicated that final configuration of the Spark EV will be influenced by feedback gleaned from GM's existing EV demo fleets currently operating in Shanghai (Sail EV), Korea (Cruze EV) and India (Beat EV).
