The Chevy Silverado is the second best-selling pickup in America, with the Ram behind it a distant third. The Silverado is all new this year, offering a new line of engines, transmissions and trims, as well as expanded capabilities. Of note are unique features like a power-operated tailgate and a rearview camera mirror. Chevrolet has also expanded the Silverado’s bed width giving it best-in-class volume figures, and the bed floor is stronger than before. The Ram, also new for 2019, has handsome styling, an impressive number of trims and features, and improved towing and payload numbers. The much-loved diesel engine has been delayed, but in its place is a mild hybrid. Dubbed eTorque, the system adds up to 90 lb-ft additional launch torque to the V6 and 130 lb-ft to the Hemi V8. Ram’s eTorque is standard on the V6 and optional on the V8.
Chevrolet Silverado Advantages
The Silverado offers better max towing and payload numbers, a lower base price and an available fully power-operated tailgate. The Silverado offers more engine options and more horsepower, as well as more headroom and legroom both front and rear.
Ram 1500 Advantages
The Ram offers a coil-spring rear suspension, available airbag suspension and a larger infotainment screen. Ram interiors are sufficiently different by trim as to justify the additional cost, and there are all manner of driver assists including the ability to automatically parallel park.
Both trucks offer an expansive model range running from basic to plush. Both have powerful V6 and V8 engine options, advanced driver assists and tech features, plush cabins and a choice of bed lengths. Both the Ram and Silverado offer off-road packages and upgrades for heavy-duty towing, and both offer similar warranties.
If you’re looking for a crew cab with higher towing, payload and horsepower and best-in-class bed volume, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is your truck. However, the Ram 1500 isn’t far behind in any of these categories, and it offers a smoother ride with its optional air suspension, plus a more refined interior. We’re especially fond of the big 12-inch touch screen and excellent eTorque system. Both trucks offer tons of clever storage solutions, and each has a bevy of unique features bound to sway fence-sitting buyers one way or the other.
