A Driving Machine for Seven
BMW's 2- or 3-row SUV remains one of the most fun-to-drive entries in the midsize luxury SUV segment. A wide range of engine options includes the bread-and-butter turbocharged 6-cylinder, a 445-horsepower turbocharged V8, a clean diesel engine rated to return 29 mpg on the highway and a plug-in hybrid. The sporty BMW X5 can be a tad high-strung for some shoppers, but it makes up for it with excellent handling.
From our 2018 BMW X5 full review: "With four different powertrains, the 2018 X5 luxury SUV has four distinct driving experiences. Broadly speaking, all have quick acceleration and nimble handling for an SUV. As with other BMWs, the X5 favors sportiness rather than a cream-puff ride, though it’s by no means uncomfortable."
BMW has a couple of options that can save you money at the pump. There's the xDrive35d, the diesel-powered X5, with 29 mpg on the highway. For the best fuel economy with a gas engine (and the most affordable X5), opt for the sDrive35i, which pairs a 6-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive for 18 mpg around town and 25 on the highway. The newest option, the X5 xDrive40e, is a plug-in hybrid with 14 miles of all-electric range that can reach 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

If 445 horsepower just doesn't do it for you, you'll be glad to know the BMW X5 M offers up 567 horsepower, along with all the additional performance and visual upgrades you'd expect. The same treatment is also available in the sleeker BMW X6 M.
Build and Price
The 2018 BMW X5 lineup starts at about $58,000, and maxes out at right around $124,000 for a fully outfitted X5 M. But those are sticker prices, and you should expect to pay a bit less.
