BMW greenlights Concept Gran Coupe for production

Speaking at an exclusive BMW Design Night event in Munich, Dr. Klaus Draeger, member of the board of management of BMW AG, Research and Development, confirmed that the striking Concept Gran Coupe concept would be joining the automaker’s lineup as a production model. Draeger offered few other details about the elegantly styled four-door that will go up against cars like the Audi A7 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera, but it appears that it will go on sale sometime in 2012 and like some other current BMW models, is likely to offer both conventional and hybrid powertrains.

First seen at this year’s Beijing Auto Show last April, the one-off Concept Gran Coupe met with overwhelming positive response. The production model will reportedly share a good deal in common with the new 6 Series line that’s set to launch next year. However, with four doors and a more spacious rear-seat area, BMW sees the Gran Coupe as a stunning alternative to the two-door 6 Series that still will offer a similarly dynamic personality. Even more important, much of the Gran Coupe’s exterior detailing -- particularly front and rear lighting treatments -- points the way toward elements you can expect to see turn up in a number of other future BMW offerings.
