BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo: Concept, Defined

By Editors on February 16, 2009 12:40 PM
At first glance, we'd file BMW's latest creation, the Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo, under the same category as the X6, but the problem is that it isn't a "Sport Activity Coupe" but rather a "Progressive Activity Sedan" (PAS). Basically, it's a BMW Sedan that sits higher off the ground, seats four people comfortably and has a unique X6-like shape that allows for more cargo room (58 cubic feet with the seats folded down) than a 5 Series Sedan. Of note is the two-piece tailgate that opens like a sedan trunklid for when loading cargo in tight spaces and like a hatch when loading larger items. Not to let the exterior steal the show, designers extended the center console from the dashboard to the rear seating area to act as an armrest for the second-row passengers. There's no mention of any production date thus far, but with all of the out-of-the-box ideas that BMW decided to incorporate into this concept, we're wondering how much of this vehicle will remain only a concept.
