Revealed in Geneva, the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept is an electric-powered dream machine that a foresees a design direction for the luxury marque. At the unveiling of this sleek 2-seat roadster, Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, noted the firm is committed to offering an electric model in its future portfolio and that the EXP 12 Speed 6e could help the company reap feedback from its luxury customers to help formulate a successful path forward.

Luxury EV statement

Dürheimer said this one-off offers concrete proof the firm is “defining electric motoring in the luxury sector, with the appropriate technology, high quality materials and refinement levels you’d expect from a true Bentley. The automaker has already confirmed it plans to introduce plug-in hybrid models across the lineup, starting with a PHEV version of its new Bentayga SUV in 2018.

The exterior styling of the EXP 12 Speed 6e reflects an evolution of the Bentley design thinking, something we can expect to filter down to other products. From its prominent grille treatment with a “6e” that illuminates in white when the vehicle is switched on, the EXP 12 Speed 6e establishes an impressive presence punctuated by its long hood, short overhangs and elegant side cameras that replace conventional exterior mirrors.

Elegant, innovative interior

Inside, the concept embodies heritage luxury cues and advanced tech touches. Supple tufted leather and rich wood veneers and copper accents team with a large curved glass center console that houses a high-definition OLED touchscreen display. The Speed 6e’s yoke-style steering wheel features handmade cut-glass sections that have controls for a selection of infotainment/navigation functions while each post is topped with a mission-specific button, one that serves up an instant performance boost, the other that engages a speed regulator to limit speed through schools zones or other high-traffic density areas. As part of its fully-connected/app-rich environment, the Speed 6e also has a secondary control panel that allows the passenger to access e-mail, social media and other entertainment functions.

While no specifics were offered on the EXP 12 Speed 6e’s powertrain, it appears there would be some sort of all-wheel drive configuration, with a range of 200 miles for this pure electric.
