- Bump in output to 221 horsepower
- New MBUX user interface
- Due in late 2019
- Current 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLA priced from $33,100
Given this new small, sporty Mercedes 4-door coupe’s substantial array of standard and available electronic features, the German automaker unveiled its next generation 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan at the January Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The sleeker, more aggressive styling combined with its tech features seemed to impress the assembled electronics geeks.
The front-drive CLA’s new 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder engine delivers 221 horsepower (13 more than before) and 258 lb-ft. of torque through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and 4MATIC Variable-Torque all-wheel drive is available.
The 2020 CLA’s new interior offers up a new leather steering wheel with shift paddles and touch-control buttons, wide-screen dual displays with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen Multimedia Display. That center display can be controlled through a new-design touchpad in its center console. The list of additional electronic features includes as standard the new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) “Interior Assistant” with “natural language understanding and keyword activation.”
In addition to voice control with learning capabilities, a system option includes gesture control that reacts to hand and arm motions for adjusting radio volume and other settings. Mercedes describes MBUX as “a completely new multimedia system featuring innovative technology based on Artificial Intelligence and an intuitive operating system.” Just like calling up electronic info-babes Siri or Alexa, its intelligent voice control is summoned by saying “Hey Mercedes.”
Among the long roster of standard items are sport seats with integrated headrests, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a Panorama Roof, LED headlamps, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, new 18-inch wheels, keyless start, attention assist and other safety features including adaptive braking with active brake assist, hill-start assist and a brake hold function and crosswind assist.
Buyers can opt for dual 10.25-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and center touchscreen, a heated steering wheel, all-around view camera, parking assist, premium Burmeister audio, dynamic body control with adaptive damping and a head-up display.
The comprehensive Driver Assistance Package includes adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, automatic emergency braking with cross traffic detection, active lane change assist and blind spot warning.
Fuel economy, performance and pricing will be announced closer to the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA when it arrives at dealerships in late 2019. Pricing of the current model starts at $33,100.
