An all-new platform and a range topping 400-horsepower hybrid are among the highlights of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, a midsize 3-row SUV set to challenge rivals like the Acura MDX, Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. The Aviator will be offered in five trim levels starting at $51,100 for the Aviator Standard and ranging up to $87,800 for the Aviator Black Label Grand Touring. Prices exclude $1,095 destination. 

The Aviator represents a departure from conventional crossover SUV construction that uses a transversely mounted engine to primarily drive the front wheels. Instead, the newest Lincoln takes the approach of a more traditional SUV with a longitudinally mounted engine that drives the rear wheels in 2-wheel drive. Both 2- and all-wheel drive will be offered on various models.

Five trim levels

The 2020 Lincoln Aviator will come in a base rear-drive model powered by the twin turbo 3.0-liter V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission called the Aviator Standard. This engine will produce 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The range topping 2020 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring hybrid model will have a combined output of 450 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque from its twin turbo V6. That engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission which incorporates an electric motor to provide the additional boost. This plug-in hybrid will also offer a pure electric driving mode, but execs declined to announce the range. The Grand Touring is available in two trims, the standard model  which starts at $68,800 plus the aforementioned $87,800 Black Label variant.

Stepping up from the base model will put you into a 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve model, which starts at $56,190. The non-hybrid Aviator Black Label goes for $77,695. All models can be configured on the Lincoln Aviator Build & Price site.

True to concept

Introduced at the 2018 New York Auto Show as a concept, the 2020 Aviator stays true to the original show vehicle with clean crisp lines, a slightly sloping roofline and a muscular upright look that is unmistakably an SUV. Different exterior accents are used to distinguish the various trim levels. Base and Reserve models have a lattice inspired grille texture, while the Black Label version uses solid element instead of the mesh for a bolder look. Grand Touring models incorporate different sized elements that grow in size as they get closer to the center of the opening. The Lincoln badge features a blue tint on Grand Touring models, while dark accents are used on the side vents and lower body trim pieces. Wheels measuring from 19 to 22 inches will be available in different patterns.

Inside, the Aviator features 3-row seating, with seating for six with second row captain’s chairs or seven when a second-row bench is specified. The second-row seats also index forward and back to provide additional legroom as needed in the second and third rows. The interior is finished in leather and features aluminum machine-turned trim and open-pore wood accents.

Co-Pilot 360 Plus

All models will be equipped with Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus, a suite of driver assists that includes Traffic Jam Assist, which helps guide the vehicle with adaptive cruise featuring stop and go capability, traffic sign recognition, evasive steer assist, and emergency braking. Also included is automatic reverse braking if the vehicle senses an obstacle. Active Park Assist Plus will also automatically park the vehicle in parallel or perpendicular spots with no driver intervention.

The 2020 Lincoln Aviator also debuts a new feature from the luxury division, dubbed “Phone as a Key” where your smart phone can be programmed to act as a key to the vehicle. Activated through the Lincoln Way App, it gives the owner an ability to lock and unlock the vehicle, open the powerlift gate as well as start and drive the vehicle without a traditional key. The phone can also be used to set the seats, mirrors and steering column. Owners can also “loan” the vehicle by enabling up to four remote devices to access the vehicle.

Pricing and availability

The Aviator's pricing from $51,100 to $87,800 slots it neatly between the current 2019 Lincoln Nautilus, which starts at just over $40,000 and overlaps the base full-size Navigator, which is priced from about $72,000. Dealers will begin accepting orders next month with deliveries of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator expected in the summer.

Where will the Lincoln Aviator be built?

The Aviator will be built in Ford’s recently retooled Chicago assembly plant, which also produces the redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer. The new Explorer shares its platform with the Aviator.
