2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD First Look
- Bold look for Chevy’s heavy-duty pickup
- Two new powertrains
- On sale mid-2019
- Current model priced from $34,400
Chevrolet will formally launch the Silverado HD pickup at the Chicago Auto Show in February and will put the heavy-duty model on sale in mid-2019. The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD promises to be the most capable and advanced version yet and features a look distinct from its half-ton counterpart as well as two new powertrains.
“We know the needs and priorities of heavy-duty customers are different than those of either light-duty or medium-duty customers,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, chief engineer, Silverado HD. “As such, we built a heavy-duty truck tailor-made for them that has more differentiation than ever before from light-duty models, offers advanced towing technologies to improve towing confidence and includes new features such as the integrated Bedstep, which makes it easier to access the bed while pulling a fifth-wheel trailer.”
Distinct styling, new powertrains
Sharing only the roof with the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the HD has a bold front look inspired by heavy machinery with sharply creased character lines and exclusive body panels. The Silverado HD shares the same updated interior as the half-ton model and also benefits from a longer wheelbase that results in three additional inches of legroom for rear passengers in the crew cab truck.
The 2020 Silverado HD will offer a choice of two new powertrains: a direct-injected gasoline engine with a 6-speed automatic or a Duramax turbodiesel V8 with 910 lb-ft of torque delivered through a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet declined to release full specs on the new truck and only said that both engines will provide increased towing and payload capabilities along with new customer-focused trailering technology.
Pricing will be announced closer to its mid-2019 launch. The current 2018 Chevrolet Silverado HD is priced from $34,400 for the regular cab, $38,400 for the crew cab plus $1,495 delivery.
