  • It's an all-new Avalon, from the tip of its nose to its tailpipes
  • All-new, yes, but custom-tailored to fit the "best-of" Avalon character traits
  • Available with V6 spirit or as a 43-mpg hybrid model
  • Still a Toyota, so still a resale-value giant
  • ...and yes, Virginia, it does include Apple CarPlay

For the sake of the handwriting on the wall, Toyota has created the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon. This evolution of the brand features a longer wheelbase with shorter overhangs, more power both in its V6 version and from the hybrid model, and premium interior roominess. Arriving in May, the new Avalon offers a modern mix of style and feature substance squarely targeting a world that's rapidly heading toward domination from crossover SUVs -- a reality that every carmaker, including Toyota, is meeting with both sales joy and marketing fear.

For 2019, Toyota has evolved the front-wheel-drive Avalon to stress pleasure and sportiness. Shared with the new-for-2018 Toyota Camry, a new 2GR 3.5-liter V6 now produces 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and uses that power smartly with the help of a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The Avalon hybrid models get a bump to 215 horsepower and are paired with the easiest-to-live-with continuously variable automatic transmission that Toyota has ever campaigned. Fuel-economy numbers for both drivetrains are excellent, with the V6 achieving as much as 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, and 43 mpg city/44 mpg highway for the hybrids.

Choose your weapon

For those aspiring to pleasure, the Avalon XLE and Limited models step up. Available both in V6 and hybrid form, these two trim levels both offer plenty of features for their prices, but it's the V6-powered Avalon Limited (starting at $42,695) that carries the day. For starters, the Limited is the only Avalon available with leather seating, and it's the only Avalon besides the top-dog Touring (not available as a hybrid) to give you both heated and ventilated front seats.

If sporty driving is your pleasure, the Avalon XSE and Touring models are your goals. Notable for their 19-inch wheels, quad chrome exhaust tips (on V6 models), aluminum pedal covers, and paddle shifters on the steering wheel (even on the XSE HV hybrid), the Avalon XSE and Touring trims will put you in the mood to drive.

Keeping in mind that the previous-generation Toyota Avalon was no slouch, it follows that the ride comfort and braking performance on this latest version -- while perfectly effective -- won't shock you. Steering feel and response, however, are exceptional, and this, combined with a new multilink rear suspension and stiffer suspension components, make driving the Avalon on "interesting" roads much more satisfying.

For the non-tourist Avalon driver, the deceptively named Touring model is the first choice. This is not because of the Touring's exclusive Active Noise Cancellation and Engine Sound Enhancement features, but because of the potential shown by the car's standard Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). AVS uses G sensors to continuously vary the shock-absorber damping forces independently at all four corners of the car 50 times per second. While all of the 2019 Avalons feature a push-button drive-mode selector on the center console, only the Avalon Touring gives you a Sport S+ mode, which enhances the suspension performance rather than just the engine, transmission and steering.

The look, the feel, the sound and vision

Toyota's Michigan design center custom-tailored the new Avalon to hang on tight to the 5-passenger sedan's current, non-SUV-buying customers, while aiming to add to its fan-base with some younger attractees as well. Visually, Toyota expects that latter goal to be achieved by adding a swallow-everything grille and some knockout character-lines (make sure you buy the right color) to the car's profile. Both exterior styling cues are striking, but one look will tell you that Toyota has placed a lot of the design weight at the front-end of the new Avalon.

On closer look, however, you may find your favorite Avalon highlights in the interior. As a driver, we noted that the front corners of the car were dead easy to reckon when pulling into or out of a parking space. We also pleasure in the roominess of the cabin -- Toyota claims best-in-class room for your shoulders, knees and noggin -- and the first-class feel of the materials anywhere our hands or fingers landed. And the strongest character note was the delicious way the generous center console sweeps up the dash to show off the 9-inch infotainment touch screen.

The new Avalon makes a few great leaps forward in in-car entertainment, starting with five USB ports. Toyota's Entune system is now up to speed with Apple CarPlay as standard -- the company is "still in negotiations" regarding Android Auto -- along with smartwatch Amazon Alexa connectivity. A clean-sounding 8-speaker audio setup comes standard on XLE and XSE models with a superb 14-speaker JBL system on Avalon Limited and Touring models (optional on the others).

Beyond the expected bevy of airbags, every new Avalon comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense Plus (TSS-P). In feature [benefit] order TSS-P includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection [warns the driver if it senses a pedestrian of being hit], Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control [lets you preset a speed and following distance, and will automatically slow/brake to a full stop if those presets are compromised], Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist [senses lane markings and can alert you or make steering adjustments to keep you in your lane], and Automatic High Beams [automatically toggles between high and low beams when it senses approaching headlights/taillights]. Rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring systems are also standard.

Is the 2019 Toyota Avalon a game changer? No, but it's not any other kind of cliché either. If today's full-on SUV onslaught leaves you uninspired, and you want a 4-door sedan that lets you take pride in, enjoy driving every day, and feel taken care of all the while, a new Avalon will get you where you want to go.
