Following the introduction of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz G-Class at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the German auto maker’s AMG sub-brand has taken the wraps off the high performance G 63. The redesigned 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

In addition to adopting the new interior and exterior design of the revamped G-Class, the AMG G 63 boasts a handbuilt 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 beneath the hood, which produces 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That output is delivered to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. The torque split has also been altered for a more rear-drive biased 40:60 ratio and the G 63 sports AMG specific touches like a custom grille, flared wheel arches, side pipes and 22-inch wheels.

"The new AMG G 63 brings driving performance to the segment of unadulterated off-road vehicles in unexpected form,” said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG. “It was important for us to tie in with the original character on account of the cult status the G 63 enjoys with our customers and fans. The vehicle has nevertheless reached a completely new dimension in terms of technology with the handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine as well as in combination with the off-road characteristics, the agility and the vehicle dynamics achieved. This applies to the entire G-Class model series. Mercedes-AMG is responsible for their suspension and chassis development as well as V8 competence."

Zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds

The G 63 completes a sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (est.), 0.9 seconds faster than the previous model. This dynamic performance is maintained up to the limited maximum speed of 137 mph, or 149 mph with the AMG Driver‘s package. On the fuel economy front, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine in the G 63 with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which significantly lowers the fuel consumption.

Buyers can opt for the AMG Night Package, which gives the G 63 a more sinister look. The appearance package includes dark tinted headlamp, taillamp and turn indicator lenses, as well as the rear door and side windows. Obsidian Black paint is used on exterior mirror caps, the spare wheel ring and the trim on the front and rear bumpers. Also receiving the blacked-out treatment are the brush guards and matte black 21- or 22-inch wheels.

Exclusive "Edition 1" special models of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 will be offered when the new vehicle goes on sale. It includes a Designo Night Black Magno paint scheme with contrasting matte Graphite Grey sports stripes along the vehicle sides, finished with exterior mirror housings that wear a decorative red stripe. The matte black 22-inch forged wheels feature a cross-spoke design with red-painted rim flanges.

The red highlights continue in the interior including contrast topstitching on the dashboard support, center console, door panels and rear seats. The diamond-quilted front sport seats in Black/Red Pepper Nappa leather also use the red stitching. Other highlights include carbon-fiber trim and a flat-bottom performance steering wheel clad in microfiber. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 will launch in the U.S. by the end of this year with pricing announced closer to its on-sale date.
