The Dodge Challenger and Charger may be getting long in the tooth, but these muscle cars remain strong sellers for FCA, with combined sales up 70 percent since 2008. Part of this relates to their great style, plus a good chassis with a mechanical lineage dating back to an earlier E-Class Mercedes. Equally significant, Dodge and the SRT folks have done a fantastic job of continually pushing the performance envelope with these large cars, which continues in big way for 2019.

2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye

The biggest news is the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye arriving late this year. Dodge has effectively taken the engine from last year’s limited production Demon and used it to boost the performance of the Hellcat. With 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque, the new Hellcat Redeye in Widebody guise has become Dodge’s quickest and fastest muscle car, able to reach 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 203 mph. The quarter mile comes up in 10.8 seconds at 131 mph. Standard Redeye models are 0.3 seconds slower through the quarter mile but still retain their 203-mph top speed. The Hellcat Redeye has an 8-speed automatic transmission, no manual is offered. Unlike the Demon, there is no limit on the number of Redeye models that can be built.

The 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine is fed mass quantities of air through a new dual-scoop hood that’s reminiscent of the one on the 1971 Dodge Demon. This low-restriction hood, says Dodge, improves airflow into the inlet box by 18 percent, while dropping the temp of inlet air by 4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Compared to the standard Hellcat engine (717 horsepower), the Redeye powerplant has a larger blower, increased boost pressure, a higher rpm limit and dual-stage fuel pumps. Other unique Redeye features are a Torque Reserve feature providing 3.9 psi of boost at launch, plus an SRT Power Chiller (which uses the a/c to further cool intake air) and an After-Run Chiller (that helps keep the blower cool after the engine has been shut down). Strengthened driveshafts and beefier axles cope with the extra torque.

Widebody package availability expanded

In other 2019 Dodge Challenger news, the Widebody Package is now offered on both the Hellcat and Challenger R/T Scat Pack models. The extra 3.5 inches of overall width in the fender flares allows for wider wheels and tires, which work with larger 6-piston Brembo brakes and suspension upgrades such as stiffer springs and larger sway bars to make the Scat Pack car a full two seconds quicker around a 2.1-mile test track (compared to a Challenger Scat Pack without Widebody). Forged 20-inch aluminum wheels shod with 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires, are available with Widebody. This model has a top speed of 195 mph versus 199 for the standard Hellcat, but is quicker through the quarter mile at 10.9 seconds hitting 127 mph compared to the Hell’s 11.2 seconds at 125 mph.

The Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack continues in 2019, powered by the naturally aspirated 392 cubic inch V8 with 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The Scat Pack boasts a new look for 2019, courtesy of the aluminum hood from the 2018 Challenger Hellcat. It sports a power bulge hood with a dedicated air intake flanked by dual extractors that pull hot air from the engine bay. Launch control and launch assist are standard on the 2019 R/T Scat Pack, as are SRT Drive Modes and Performance Pages.

Rounding out the 2019 Challengers are the R/T and new 300-horseower 3.6-liter V6 GT RWD models.  Both get Super Track Pack features that include performance suspension, enhanced steering, paddle shifters and a performance hood, plus heavily bolstered seats covered in a houndstooth cloth. A Performance Handling Group brings 4-piston Brembo brakes and 20 x 9 wheels to the GT RWD, along with a larger rear anti-roll bar for reduced understeer. On the Challenger R/T, the Performance Handling Group offers upgraded springs and shocks and bushings, together with 20 x 9.5 forged rims and a limited-slip differential.

2019 Dodge Challenger Pricing

Challenger pricing starts at $28,690 for the V6 SXT model. The new 2019 Challenger GT rear-drive model is $31,390. All-wheel drive adds $3,000 to each. The Challenger R/T is priced from $34,495, while the R/T Scat Pack lists for $40,390 including $1,000 gas guzzler tax on manual transmission models. The 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is $60,045 including $1,700 gas guzzler, while the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye will retail for $71,045, also with a $1,700 gas guzzler tax. All prices include $1,395 delivery.   

2019 Dodge Charger

For 2019, Dodge offers six Charger sedans that range from the pedestrian SXT to the almighty SRT Hellcat. Two Charger versions are new: the GT and SXT AWD. The base Charger, the SXT, continues to be powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that sends 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Next up is the new Charger GT, powered by a 300-horspower version of the same V6. The GT has a performance hood, rear spoiler, revised fascias and altered side sills to complement its sport suspension, paddle shifters and lively 3.07:1 axle ratio. Among the available options on the GT are 20-inch Satin Carbon wheels and a cold weather package that includes a heated steering wheel and seats.

Also new for 2019 is the Charger SXT AWD, powered by the 300-horsepower V6. As its name suggests, this is an all-wheel-drive model with an active transfer case, and its front-axle disconnect contributes to excellent EPA highway fuel economy rating of 27 mpg. The optional Blacktop Package gets you 19-inch Black Noise wheels.

V8 Charger updates

The V8 Chargers begin with the R/T, powered by the classic 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. The Charger R/T has been significantly updated for 2019 with a new hood, fascia and side sills, plus a spoiler and seats to go along with a new high-performance suspension, paddle shifters and a 2.62:1 rear axle.

As for the Charger R/T Scat Pack, it continues in 2019 with the naturally aspirated 392 cubic inch V8 that sends 485 horsepower to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic. New for 2019 are standard Launch Assist and Line Lock. A switch on the dashboard enables the engine, transmission, driveline and suspension to coordinate for consistently great launches every time. To identify this car, look for the Scat Pack bee badge on the decklid, where it replaces the R/T badge. Dual Carbon stripes, a satin-black hood and three-mode active Bilstein shocks are available as options.

Dodge calls the 2019 Charger SRT Hellcat “the quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world.” Who are we to quibble? This super Charger is powered by the 6.2-liter Hemi V8 that sends 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic with shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

For 2019, the Charger Hellcat has a new performance grille with dual inlets designed to feed cooler and denser air into the engine compartment. Also significant are four new standard race-inspired technologies: Launch Assist (which uses wheel-speed sensors to optimize grip); Line Lock (which engages the front brakes to let the driver clean the rear tires with a burnout); After-Run Chiller
(which keeps the blower cool after the engine has been shut off); and Torque Reserve (which pre-fills the supercharger with pressure so a reserve of torque can be delivered immediately upon acceleration from the next standing stop).

Pricing for the 2019 Dodge Charger models will be announced closer to the on-sale date this fall.
