BMW has taken the wraps off its second generation X4, a sporty crossover SUV with coupe-inspired styling. The remake features new underpinnings that include wider front and rear tracks, a lower center of gravity and improved aerodynamics. The 2019 BMW X4 will be offered in two trim levels, the standard X4 xDrive30i and the performance oriented X4 M40i.

In addition to the new platform and look, the 2019 BMW X4 has new suspension settings, a lengthy list of safety features and driver assists and greater passenger comfort thanks to a larger cabin and new tri-zone climate control system.

Riding on a 2.1-inch longer 112.7-inch wheelbase, the X4 gains about three inches in overall length to now measure 187.5 inches overall. Adding to the larger cabin dimensions is a vehicle width that grows 1.4 inches to 75.0. The BMW X4 also stands a bit lower by a tenth of an inch to come in at 63.8 inches. Short overhangs and subtle hexagonal wheel arches contribute to the vehicle’s athletic look that emphasizes its 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution.

New look

The traditional BMW kidney grille is larger and has a new three-dimensional look. It’s flanked by twin LED headlamps units with swept contours and horizontal foglamps integrated into the outer air intakes. In profile, a prominent character line breaks up the bodyside surface and resolves at the rear with additional lines that emphasize the coupe-like rake to the rear greenhouse. The sleek roofline, with an elongated signature Hofmeister kink at the base of the C-pillar, underscores the dynamic proportions of the vehicle. The clean design of the rear features full LED taillights formed in a slim three-dimensional shape positioned at the extreme edges of the rear. Both models feature twin exhaust tips.  “The second-generation BMW X4 brings together a distinctive, dynamic silhouette with a clear, pared-back use of forms,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

Inside, the all-new BMW X4 has a roomier cabin with an upscale feel. A minimalistic approach to the design incorporates controls that are clearly arranged and set off by accent trim. The seats have been redesigned with more aggressive bolstering. The X logo is embossed on front and rear door surfaces and the interior features ambient lighting with extra sources around the instrument panel and center console. A large, free-standing 10.25-inch infotainment screen is standard and dominates the center stack.

Powertrains

The 2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i is equipped with a 248-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine driving all four wheels. It produces 258 lb-ft of torque between 1,450 and 4,800 rpm, enabling the vehicle to accelerate to 60 mph in 6 seconds. The 2019 BMW X4 M40i features a twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine producing 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. That model can sprint to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. Both models are equipped with paddle-shift 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmissions.

All driver-assist and semi-autonomous features offered by BMW are available, including the latest generation of active cruise control with stop-and-go. Driver assist systems include blind spot detection, lane departure warning, daytime pedestrian protection, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, rear cross traffic alert for the rear and speed limit information. The Driving Assistant Plus Package highlights include active lane keep assist with side collision avoidance, traffic jam assist and evasion aid and front and rear cross traffic alert.

The all-new 2019 BMW X4 is expected to go on sale in July 2018 with pricing starting at $50,450 for 30i, and $60,450 for M40i plus destination fees.
