2019 BMW M5 Competition Edition Launched
Taking the concept of a high-performance sports sedan to a new level, the 2019 BMW M5 Competition Sedan has made its debut boasting 617 horsepower, an enhanced chassis and sharper handling. The M5 Competition Edition will be limited to just 200 units and is the latest in series of Competition models, which includes the M2 Coupe, M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe/Convertible.
The 2019 BMW M5 Competition Edition is distinguished by unique light alloy 20-inch wheels, a lower ride height and high-gloss black accents on the grille and window surrounds, B-pillar trim, exterior mirror caps and door handles. Inside, there are black seat belts with the red and blue M color accents, an M Competition graphic that appears in the instrument cluster when the car is started as well as custom floor mats.
Beneath the hood is a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 making 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission delivers power to all four wheels and the powertrain is good for 0-60 mph sprints of 3.1 seconds. The M5 Competition Edition has a throatier engine note thanks to an M Sport exhaust system that includes a flap-controlled twin pipe layout. Sport Plus mode opens the flaps for a more aggressive sound, and the driver is given the option of toning down the note when hitting the M Sound Control button.
In addition to a lower ride height, the suspension also features revamped spring and shock rates, firmer anti-roll bars and quicker steering response. Drivers can choose among three modes, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus to vary shock rates, throttle response and transmission shift programming. Rounding out the package are upgraded brakes that feature 6-piston front calipers and single-piston rear units. Carbon ceramic brakes are an available option. Pricing for the 2019 BMW M5 Competition Edition starts at $110,000 plus $995 delivery.
