2018 Volvo V90 in Geneva Debut
The wraps are now off the new Volvo V90 Wagon which bows at the Geneva Auto Show and goes on sale here sometime next year as a 2018 model. A more practical take on the new 2017 Volvo S90 Sedan, this striking 5-passenger hauler shares the same modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) – which also is used in the XC90 SUV – as well as the S90’s distinctive styling cues. Enhanced functionality aside, Volvo says it optimized the V90’s driving dynamics to deliver comfort, refinement and “a sense of engaging control and predictability.”
Efficient Drive-E power
Like the XC90 and S90, Volvo’s new V90 Wagon also is fitted with the automaker’s Drive-E family of 2.0-liter 4-cylinder force-fed engines backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission. Here in the U.S., motivation choices are expected to mirror the S90’s and start with a front-drive T5 fitted with a turbocharged version that makes 240 horsepower and a supercharged/turbocharged T6 AWD that develops 316 horses. Volvo will also offer a range-topping T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid set to develop around 400 horsepower and offer a pure EV range of roughly 31 miles.
Lined in leather, the plush passenger compartment of Volvo’s new V90 Wagon also mirrors the S90’s stylish and luxurious look -- including the full digital dash and large Sensus Connect touchscreen to handle the infotainment and climate control chores. Like the S90, it will deliver class-leading in-car connectivity that includes smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay. The V90 also will come with or offer a bounty of advanced safety features that include Volvo’s sophisticated Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology that includes large animal detection and road departure mitigation capabilities.
“We have a very strong position in the wagon segment,” noted Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars at the reveal. “In many people’s minds we are known as the definitive wagon brand. While the Volvo brand today stands for more than wagons, we are proud to carry forward this rich heritage with the V90.”
