2018 Toyota RAV4

Starting Price: $25,455 | Price Yours

Above Average: Outstanding hybrid option, quality and reliability, almost a quarter-century of development

Below Average: Fuel economy, standard engine acceleration

Consensus: Short on driving excitement, long on all-around quality and comfort

A relative latecomer to the compact crossover SUV derby (from 2007), the Rogue has soared to the top of the sales charts largely on the strength of its styling, roominess, and attractive interior. Smooth ride quality and quiet operation also contribute. While performance is basically mid-pack, the Rogue’s comfort and quality virtues have carried it near the top of the sales charts, very close to the segment-leading Toyota RAV4. Note: there’s also a Rogue Sport, but this is a different vehicle, on a smaller scale. Not only is the RAV4 the bestselling compact crossover SUV, it trailed only full-size pickups in 2017 sales. Introduced in 1994, the RAV4 established this increasingly popular vehicle segment. With a major makeover due for the 2019 model year, the RAV4’s virtues are typical Toyota: no-worry, no-problem ownership, and respectable cargo room.

Nissan Rogue Advantages

Nifty styling, roomy interior, smooth operator all-around

Toyota RAV4 Advantages

Quiet and comfortable at all speeds, quality fit and finish, extensive list of standard driver assist safety features

Similarities

Both vehicles offer all-wheel drive, both offer hybrid models, both offer substantial array of driver assist safety features

Final Recommendation

Both vehicles are quiet, comfortable, and segment bestsellers (RAV4 first, Rogue a close second). The Rogue’s appeal is rooted in styling, attractive interiors, and all-around comfort. With almost a quarter-century of development, the RAV4 is refined and typical Toyota in terms of quality and reliability. (Toyota plans a major RAV4 makeover for model year 2019. The redesigned model is due to go on sale this fall.)
