Set to make its formal public debut later this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, the new 2018 McLaren 570S Spider brings an al fresco experience to the automaker’s entry-level exoticar. Joining the 570S Coupe and 570GT in the Sport Series portfolio, the new Spider shares all of the basic mechanicals with that pair, including an ultra-rigid MonoCell II carbon fiber core structure, 562-horspower/3.8-liter twin-turbo McLaren V8 and 7-speed SSG seamless-shift transmission with Launch Control.

Crowned by a power-retractable hardtop and wearing bespoke rear bodywork to accommodate that change, the new Spider tips the scales at 2,895 pounds dry -- 101 more than the 570S Coupe. However, McLaren Automotive’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt, promises this open-air variant delivers “the same thrilling dynamic performance and exceptional driver involvement” as its hard-shell sibling. For the record, that means an identical 3.1 second 0-60 mph sprint time and a 204 mph top speed – although that does dip to 196 mph when the Spider’s top is lowered – as well as razor-sharp responsiveness whether the adaptive suspension is toggled into Normal, Sport or Track modes.

Borrowing design technology proved on McLaren’s 650S and 675LT Spider models, the electrically operated 1-touch/2-piece top on the 570S Spider is made of lightweight composite materials and can be cycled in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 25 mph. When dropped, it tucks away neatly beneath a power tonneau while a glass wind deflector can be raised or lowered to help reduce wind buffeting.

Offered in a choice of 20 exterior colors on its aluminum body panels – including new Curacao Blue, Vega Blue and Sicilian Yellow – the cabin of the McLaren 570S Spider boasts all of the hand-crafted touches and creature comforts found in the 570S Coupe. Full leather upholstery, a 10-inch TFT main instrument cluster and a centrally mounted, 7.0-inch touchscreen that handles infotainment and climate control are standard. Premium Nappa leather and Alcantara trim, 8-way power seats or the same carbon fiber shell-style sports seats used in the range-topping McLaren P1 are optional, and a host of other personalization possibilities are available through McLaren Special Operations.

The order books have opened for the 2018 McLaren 570S Spider which will start at $208,800 plus destination here in the U.S. Deliveries commence this fall and the first 400 units will be specially equipped launch edition models.
