• Developed in conjunction with Renault Sport F1
  • Motor-generator units boost total output to 563 horsepower
  • 0-60 mph in less than four seconds

As a follow-up to a similar concept unveiled a year ago, Infiniti showed the 2018 Infiniti Project Black S in Paris fully realized with the help of its Renault partner’s Formula One team. Envisioned as an Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 on steroids, the Project Black S coupe incorporates three motor generating units that recapture kinetic energy and helps boost output of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6.

Starting with the Q60 Red Sport’s 400-horsepower 3.0-liter V6, the three generator units add 213 horses to bring total output to 563. This power unit is capable of propelling the Project Black S Coupe to 60 mph in less than four seconds. The power is delivered via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

F1 aero enhancements

In addition to relying on Renault Sport’s F1 expertise with the power unit, Infiniti also used the racing division’s experience in using lightweight carbon-fiber components, including the body panels and the unique rear wing. Renault Sport also put the vehicle in the wind tunnel to come up with the wing and other aero enhancements to the vehicle’s exterior.

The Project Black S also uses larger brakes and bigger 21-inch alloy wheels. Additional attention to weight savings, including the removal of the rear bench seat, pared the vehicle’s weight to just 3,915 pounds.

According to Roland Krueger, Infiniti’s president, the one-off Project Black is a “collaborative venture between Infiniti and the Renault Sport Formula One Team...[it] is a testbed for new ideas and technologies, demonstrating how our Alliance partnerships could make our ambitious visions a reality.”
