Hyundai took the wraps off its redesigned 2018 Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid at the Chicago Auto Show. The refreshed sedans boast new front and rear exterior looks, a new instrument panel center stack, an upgraded audio/navigation system and new safety features and driver assists.

A redesigned grille anchors the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid’s exterior changes. It includes more horizontal lines and a lower placement of the Hyundai logo. The hood, front fenders and a new shape for the fog lights gives the car a stronger presence and sleek look. The design also includes new available LED headlamps with Dynamic Bending Light functionality and is closely aligned with the standard Sonata, which also received a refresh for 2018.

At the back are new taillights and a new deck lid. The license plate holder is positioned below the trunk, while new, 16-inch and 17-inch decorative five-spoke wheels help distinguish the 2018 model.

Revamped interior

Inside, the 2018 Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid feature a new instrument panel center stack and a new steering wheel. The cars also are available with an upgraded audio/navigation system with a new Bird’s Eye View map perspective.

Both vehicles are now available with automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. They also come standard with blind-spot detection with rear-cross traffic alert and lane change assist.

“Our new 2018 Sonata Hybrid and Plug-in models add appeal in every area, from exterior to interior design, handling, steering, ride comfort, safety and infotainment,” Mike O’Brien, vice president of product, corporate and digital planning at Hyundai Motor America, said in a statement.

A 650-mile range

Like the 2017 model, the 2018 Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic transmission with a 38-kWh electric motor. The engine produces 154 horsepower, and when combined with the electric motor pumps out up to 193 horsepower.  A 1.76 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack is located under the trunk floor. Hyundai estimates Sonata Hybrid SE fuel economy at 39 mpg city, 45 mpg highway and 42 mpg combined. Range is estimated at more than 650 miles.

The 2018 Sonata Plug-In Hybrid features a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and 50 kWh electric motor. The EPA estimates up to 27 miles of pure electric range, while total range with the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine is 590 miles.

The 2018 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will be available at Hyundai dealerships in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont but can be custom ordered nationally.

Pricing for the 2018 models have not been released. The 2017 Sonata Hybrid started at $26,000 before destination and the 2017 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid at $34,600 before destination. Sonata Plug-in Hybrid buyers are eligible for a $4,919 federal tax credit. The standard Sonata Hybrid will be available in the first quarter this year, with the Plug-in version following in the second quarter.
