Setting new performance benchmarks, the 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast makes its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Helping celebrate Ferrari’s 70th anniversary as a manufacturer, this successor to the F12berlinetta and F12tdf packs a new 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 beneath its hood teamed with a host of innovative technology.

More power

Making the 812 Superfast truly super-fast is a 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine that develops a heady 789 horsepower – 18 more ponies than the 6.3-liter in the F12tdf. Adopting a new high-pressure direct-injection system and F1-inspired variable-geometry intake tracts, it also churns out 530 lb-ft of torque, 80 percent of which is on hand by 3,500 rpm. Backed by a specially modified version of Ferrari’s 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with quicker shift programming, the engine can blast the rear-drive 812 Superfast from 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and send it on to a 211-mph top speed.

To ensure that raw power can be fully utilized, Ferrari engineers reworked the F12/F12tdf chassis to deliver what they describe as “unparalleled handling and roadholding.” Key elements include the automaker’s first use of electric power steering as well as the latest 5.0 version of Ferrari’s patented Side Slip Control. The 812 Superfast also has the automaker’s new Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system, an advanced version of the rear-steering package introduced on the F12tdf that quickens the car’s responsiveness and agility. 

Active aerodynamics

Penned at the Ferrari Styling Center and finished in a special Rosso Settanta in honor of the firm’s the 70th Anniversary, new 812 Superfast puts a new spin on the classic shape of the automaker’s front-engine V12 models. While its profile recalls the muscular flair of the 1968 365 GTB, its powerful presence is matched with an equal measure of attention to aerodynamic detailing. Up front, active flaps help channel air under the car’s boldly sculpted body while an aggressive rear diffuser flanked by twin-paired exhaust outlets helps increase downforce at speed. Ferrari also took a unique approach towards integrating the 812 Superfast’s lighting. The shape and positioning of the car’s full-LED headlamps complements its functional hood scoops and the same holds true for the well-proportioned integration of its traditional four round taillamps.

In keeping with its more intense persona, Ferrari gave the cabin on the new 812 Superfast a more aggressive flavor starting with a new multifunction steering wheel and main instrument cluster. The bucket seats have been redesigned for greater comfort and support. Rounding out the mix is a new climate control package and the latest in infotainment. The Ferrari 812 Superfast will arrive as a 2018 model, although there’s no word yet on exactly when it will turn or what it will cost.
