2018 Ford Expedition

Starting Price: $52,985 | Price Yours

Above Average: Generous third row space, towing, power

Below Average: Still only 17 mpg in the city

Consensus: A big hit for Ford: modern, connected, more than capable

Here are two approaches to building a full-size family hauler that can tow. Chevy goes the more traditional route, building a Tahoe with a steel body on a steel frame that has a live rear axle. It’s a traditional large SUV powered by a 5.3- or 6.2-liter V8 that relies on displacement to make power. Ford’s Expedition, a newer design, has an aluminum body mounted on a steel frame with independent rear suspension. Power comes from a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that makes the Expedition efficient on the highway (24 mpg) while also enabling it to tow a 9,300-lb. trailer (with trailer-towing package). The Tahoe is rated to tow 8,400 lb. with the 6.2, or 8,600 lb. with the 5.3.

Chevrolet Tahoe Advantages

Relaxed V8s, standard Teen Driver feature, onboard Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto

Ford Expedition Advantages

Highway fuel efficiency, roomier 3rd-row seat, sliding 2nd-row seat, longer Max model, SYNC communications system

Similarities

Both of these large SUVs are large, comfortable, refined and capable.

Final Recommendation

As a newer more-efficient design that tows well and feels like a raised luxury car, the 2018 Ford Expedition has an overall edge over the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, although both of these full-size SUVs are refined and highly capable. If you plan to fill the 3rd-row with people, the roomier Ford is the obvious choice, aided by 15 cupholders. Then again, Chevrolet sells the longer Suburban for that very purpose. The older Tahoe will likely have more generous incentives than the all-new Expedition.
