Audi has unveiled a limited-edition rear-drive only V10 R8 at the Frankfurt Auto Show as a way of bringing its motorsports heritage to the streets. Only 999 2018 Audi R8 V10 RWS  (Rear Wheel Special) models will be built, divided between Coupe and Spyder models. The new cars, will be hand-assembled at Audi’s Böllinger Höfe R8 factory.

“The R8 V10 RWS is made for purists,” said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport. “A limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer. With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it successfully brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets.”

The R8 V10 RWS is distinguished by its matte black single frame grille and air inlets, while the upper side blades of the Coupe are finished in gloss black. The interior is upholstered in special leather and Alcantara and optional sport seats are available.

The mid-mounted V10 makes 532 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, propelling the Coupe to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and the Spyder in 3.8. The RWS, thanks to its rear wheel drive only design, is more than 100 pounds lighter than the standard all-wheel drive R8 and the suspension has been tuned to reflect the rear-drive configuration. As a result, engineers have dialed in the setup to allow controlled drifting of the vehicle when it is in Dynamic mode.

About 300 of the 2018 Audi R8 V10 RWS models will be available in the U.S. later this year with pricing announced closer to its on sale date.
