The latest and greenest members of the 2017 Smart set debut at the Paris Motor Show as the wraps come off of the 2017 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive Coupe and Cabrio. Heading to America next spring and next summer, respectively, this urban-focused zero-emission duo will be joined in Europe by the larger, 4-passenger Smart ForFour Electric Drive. Their arrival will make Smart the only auto manufacturer to have its entire line be available with both combustion engines and electric power.

While final U.S. specs are pending, in Euro trim, both of these new Gen II Smart EVs share the same rear-mounted 80-horsepower motor that now makes 118 lb-ft of torque and drives the aft wheels via as single-speed transmission.  Fitted with a 17.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Coupe can reach 60 mph in 11.4 seconds while the Cabrio needs 11.7 ticks, but both can hit speeds of up to 81 mph. The ED’s drivetrain has both Standard and Eco modes, the latter reducing performance and top speed while raising the level of energy regenerated under coasting/braking. Preliminary range for the Coupe and Cabrio are 99 and 96 miles, respectively with 20-to-100 percent recharging taking 22 hours using a conventional 110V line or 2.5 hours on a dedicated 240V wallbox.

To extend range and make travel even more pleasant, the new Smart ForTwo ED models are fitted with a pre-entry climate control system as well as dedicated smart control apps. They also feature selection of standard equipment not included in their gasoline-powered counterparts. Heading the list are custom instrumentation that includes a power meter and battery status display. The EVs also offer a winter package with heated steering wheel and electric drive design package that adds an electric green finish to the Tridion safety cell and door-mirror caps. Set to challenge rivals like the Fiat 500e, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf and VW eGolf, pricing and U.S.-specific EPA/range estimates for both the 2017 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive Coupe and Cabrio will be released closer to their on-sale dates here.
