Making its first public appearance in Geneva, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic Coupe is set to crank up performance over the base C300 2-door but aren’t really looking to make the full leap to a Mercedes-AMG C63. While sharing a number of mechanical elements with the 2016 C450 AMG 4MAtic Sedan -- which now appears likely to carry a C43 AMG badge for the 2017 model year -- this potent Coupe boasts a few new features against rivals like the Audi S4 Coupe and BMW 435i xDrive.

Quick, capable, confident

Like its sedan sibling, the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic Coupe gets its motivation from an AMG-massaged 3.0-liter Biturbo V6 engine that makes 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of peak torque. However, here that motive force transfers to a more rear-biased (31/69-percent) AMG-tweaked 4Matic AWD system via a new 9G-Tronic automatic transmission in place of the Sedan’s 7-speed. Custom AMG programming quickens cog changes and offers five different modes that can be activated by using steering-column-mounted paddles. That combination allows the new C43 4Matic Coupe to hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The chassis gets a similar makeover, adapting several components from the C63. These include the AMG Ride Control sport suspension and unique geometry on both axles to enhance handling and stability. The new model also benefits from electronically servo-assist variable-ratio power steering and 3-stage Electronic Stability Programming, which like the engine and transmission can be tailored using the AMG Dynamic Select modes that include Eco/Comfort/Sport/Sport Plus/Individual settings. Rounding out the mix are upsized/upgraded brakes that deliver consistent stopping power.

Adding AMG eye appeal

Visual changes to the new C43 4Matic Coupe follow typical AMG form, bringing a bolder look while bolstering functionality. Highlighting the exterior remix are a full LED lighting, a unique grille treatment, distinctive front apron and rear diffuser, a subtle decklid spoiler and twin-paired chrome dual exhaust tips set off with 225/45-front and 245/40-rear tires on 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels done in high-gloss black which can be upgraded to a 19-inches. Those seeking a more sinister look can opt for a Night Package that brings high-gloss finishes to front apron trim and rear diffuser along with two black tailpipes.

The cabin of the new C43 Coupe also reprises familiar AMG design themes. Highly supportive sport buckets covered in MB-Tex and Dinamica with red stitching are complemented by an AMG instrument cluster and multifunction flat-bottom sport steering wheel, designo red seat belts and unique light-tone longitudinal-grain aluminum accents. Other standard features include a Burmester premium audio package, Panoramic sunroof, central controller with a 7.0-inch color display and SiriusXM Satellite Radio along with all of the normal C-Class safety touches. A head-up display, heated/ventilated seats, Comand Navigation and Voice Control with an 8.4-inch screen and touchpad plus a 360-degree camera with Parktronic are some of the many options.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic Coupe arrives in showrooms here this fall. Pricing will be announced closer to the actual on-sale date.
