After months of teasing in various forms of dress and undress, the production version of the all-new 2017 Jaguar F-Pace finally debuted in Frankfurt. As promised, Jag's first-ever crossover SUV matches a unique sense of style with advanced engineering and technology that should serve it well in what's become an intensely competitive midsize segment. U.S. buyers will be able to choose from six different F-Pace variants: base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, S and the limited-run F-Pace First Edition.  

Elegantly exhilarating 

Calling its appearance "assertive yet not aggressive." Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum, describes the new F-Pace as "an all-weather Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for five people and their belongings." Retaining much of the character of the original C-X17 Concept, this new Jaguar embraces visual cues from the F-Type and XE Sedan. The sweeping lines of its largely aluminum body are highlighted by an upright but aero-friendly grille, power-bulge hood, short overhangs, sleek lighting units - including available full LED headlamps and a flowing roof that resolves in a rakish D-pillar.

Inside, the new F-Pace complements the quality look and feel that has come to characterize new-gen Jaguars with technology that includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that responds to smartphone-style swipe/drag gestures and works with various Apple and Android apps. Offered in conjunction with a 17-speaker/825-watt Meridian surround sound system, the optional InControl Touch Pro upgrade features a 10.2-inch screen, ultra-fast Ethernet Wi-Fi connectivity and a 60GB solid-state hard drive. True techies also will delight in Jaguar's Activity Key. This waterproof, shockproof wristband has an integrated transponder that disables the keyfob so it can be left inside of the locked F-Pace while the owner goes surfing or cycling. 

Aluminum intensive 

Using the Lightweight Aluminum Architecture that underpins the F-Type and XE Sedan, the new F-Pace rides a 113.0-inch wheelbase. Supplemented by high-strength steel where necessary, its robust monocoque boasts the torsional rigidity as the XE and Jag says the tuning of its alloy-intensive chassis was heavily influenced by the F-Type. The F-Pace also features a custom tuned variable-ratio electric power steering, toque vectoring by braking and a torque-on-demand all-wheel drive that relies on Jag's Intelligent Driveline Dynamics to move torque from the normal 100-percent rear bias to a 50/50 split in just 165 milliseconds. 

All F-Pace models feature an enhanced version of Jaguar Adaptive Surface Response (AdSR) technology that was introduced on the new XF. AdSR automatically optimizes traction by tweaking the programming of the throttle, transmission and traction systems. Standard features include All Surface Progress Control that functions like a low-speed cruise control as well as a Low Traction Launch function. The conventional suspension in the F-Pace also can be upgraded with an Adaptive Dynamics continuously variable shock system that also nets Configurable Dynamics further customization.

Here in the U.S., the 2017 F-Pace will launch with the choice of two supercharged 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engines, also found in the F-Type and XF. Rated at 340 and 380 horsepower - the latter exclusively fitted to F-Pace S models -- both will be backed by a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Later in the year, Jaguar's new mileage-maxing Ingenium 2.0-liter turbodiesel that makes 180 horses and 317 lb-ft of torque will join the family, also matched with an 8-speed autoshifter.

As expected, the F-Pace will offer a wide range of advanced driver-assist technologies that include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Condition Monitoring, Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection function, Blind Spot Monitor, Reverse Traffic Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Park Assist and a laser-based head-up display.

F-Pace First Edition boasts show-car detailing

Adding exclusivity during the first year of production, the range-topping F-Pace First Edition is a fully loaded model that pays homage to the C-X17 Concept. Powered by the 380-horse engine and fitted with Adaptive Dynamics, the First Edition is finished in Rhodium Silver and features the full F-Pace S body kit, LED headlamps and J-blade running lights, a sliding panoramic roof and 22-inch alloy wheels plus color-keyed accents. Inside, soft-grained Windsor leather with a C-X17-style embossed houndstooth pattern covers the seats and the 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster is complemented by the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and 10-color ambient lighting. 

On sale next spring, pricing for the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace will start at $41,895 for the 2.0-liter turbodiesel, $43,385 for the 340-horse Supercharged V6 and $57,695 for versions with the 380-horse Supercharged V6. All F-Pace models will be covered by the automaker's recently announced Jaguar EliteCare ownership packages.
