2016 VW Golf/Jetta earn top safety ratings

Two weeks ago, we reported that Volkswagen was upgrading available driver assists for the new model year. Today, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced that the 2016 Golf/Golf GTI 4-door hatchback duo, the new Golf Sportwagen and all Jetta models have earned Top Safety Pick+ ratings when equipped with VW's new Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) option. Versions of these vehicles not fitted with this supplemental package continue to carry an IIHS Top Safety Pick grade.

The 2016 Golf, Golf GTI, Golf SportWagen and Jetta TSI models arrive in dealerships this month. On Golf models that offer Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), it will be available as part of a $1,495 Driver Assistance Package that also includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Park Distance Control (Park Pilot) and Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist). On select Jetta models, the newly updated Driver Assistance Package option runs $950 and pairs Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Adaptive Cruise Control.
