2016 McLaren 650S adds features, holds price
The 2016 McLaren 650S sweetens its roster of standard and optional equipment on the Coupe and Spider models while holding the line on price. Heading the upgrade list are a host of carbon fiber details that were previously extra-cost items now be fitted for free at the buyer's request. These include the front splitter, side skirts and intakes, rear bumper and mirror casings while the carbon fiber interior package becomes standard on all models. McLaren notes this reflects $22,500 in additional value with no change in the sticker. The 650S family also will be available in 10 new color choices and offer larger, more accommodating versions of the standard racing seats as a no-cost alternative.
The option list benefits from a similar upgrades highlighted by a new McLaren Enhanced Technology Package that includes a front vehicle lifter as well as power-adjustable seats and steering column, a Meridian premium surround sound audio system, parking sensors, backup camera and a car cover, in a $9,950 grouping that reflects over a $6,000 savings compared to those items individually. McLaren also will offer a new GPS-based Track Telemetry App that gathers, records and logs a wide selection of data for real-time and post-lapping analysis, as well as circuit-capable but street-legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. As a finishing touch, buyers can opt for new soft-takedown doors.
There are no changes to the powertrain of the McLaren Super Series models. Motivation continues to be provided by the bespoke 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged M838T V8 that ships its 641 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a McLaren-developed 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Pricing for the 2016 McLaren 650S Coupe starts at $273,200 with the 650S Spider opening at $288,200. Both will go on sale here in December.
