2016 Hyundai Veloster adds a Rally Edition
Looking more intensely focused, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster lineup made its debut in Chicago with a new range-topping Rally Edition that will be limited to just 1,200 units. All versions of the sporty front-driver with its unique 3-door+hatch configuration benefit from a variety of trim upgrades, the common thread a modest nose job that includes a new dark gray grille surround and the elimination of hood vent accents. All Velosters with 18-inch alloy wheels- standard-issue on Turbo variants and optional on the naturally aspirated model -- also have 10mm wider tires for 2016 as well as enhanced audio/navigation functions including the latest iteration of Hyundai's Blue Link system.
While output of the 1.6-liter T-charged 4-cylinder in the 2016 Veloster Turbo and even-edgier Turbo R-Spec remains at 201 horsepower - 63 more than the carry over base engine -- the paddle-shift dual-clutch automatic transmission that's optional in the Turbo steps up from six to seven speeds. As in 2015, the R-spec carries on with a mandatory 6-speed manual. This force-fed duo also features new machined-finish wheels now wrapped in 245/40 all-season performance rubber. Inside, more aggressively bolstered sport buckets team with a new electroluminescent gauge cluster and optional color-keyed interior accents -- including red seat belts on the R-Spec.
Rally Edition ratchets up the excitement
Latest of the annual special-build models that have become a Veloster tradition, the 2016 Rally Edition takes the R-Spec to a new level. Finished in an exclusive Matte Blue paint set off with carbon fiber-look accent elements, the Rally Edition matches even-tauter spring/shock/stabilizer settings with RAYS ultralight forged alloy wheels that reduce unsprung weight by five pounds at each corner. Rounding out the mix are a B&M Racing Sport Shift kit for quicker cog changes, black leather cabin appointments with blue accents, a black headliner, Rally Edition floor mats and bespoke badging.
As for infotainment upgrades, the Veloster's available audio/navigation systems have added several new features, including a multi-touch screen with menu-swipe and split-screen display capabilities, HD Radio, Siri Eyes Free integration for iPhone, advanced SiriusXM functions and a revised navi setup that offers enhanced junction-view lane guidance. One year of complementary Blue Link Connected Care remains standard while the Remote and Guidance Packages are optional. The entire 2016 Hyundai Veloster lineup is set to arrive in showrooms here this May. Pricing will be released closer to the actual on-sale date.
