2016 Cadillac CT6 to get new 400-hp Twin Turbo V6, Bose Panaray audio
Ahead of the reveal at the New York Auto show, two more pieces of the 2016 Cadillac CT6 puzzle have now fallen into place with news that the automaker's flagship sedan will be the first vehicle fitted with its new 3.0-liter Twin Turbo V6 engine and a the first to feature a dedicated Bose Panaray premium audio system.
Packaged to perform
Derived from the latest 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 that will be the base engine in the CT6, the new 3.0-liter Twin Turbo V6 develops an estimated 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque - the latter on tap from 2,500-5,000 rpm. It will be backed by an 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L90 automatic transmission. Cadillac's newest engine is the first -- and only -- V6 to combine turbocharging with cylinder deactivation and start/stop technology. This efficient matchup is expected to yield up to six percent better overall fuel economy. Like the induction setup used on the ATS-V, the engine features a pair of lightweight turbochargers with low-inertia impellers along with patented low-volume charge-air coolers integrated directly into the exhaust manifolds which contribute to the optimal boost and immediate throttle response. Cadillac uses a single throttle body to meter cooled air to both turbo units, but fitted each with its own vacuum-actuated wastegate to better manage boost pressures and deliver smoother, more consistent response.
"With nearly zero turbo lag and a commensurately low-inertia rotating assembly, this engine climbs the rpm ladder and produces power on demand," said Rich Bartlett, assistant chief engineer. "Its performance is more than just the maximum output - it's how it is delivered and the new 3.0L Twin Turbo delivers it with smoothness and precision." Production of the new 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 will begin late this year at GM's Romulus Powertrain Operations plant outside of Detroit, which also will be responsible for building the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6.
Ready to set new standards in auto sound
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 will complement its impressive underhood might with a state-of-the-art audio system developed with long-time partner, Bose. Created specifically for the CT6, the new Bose Panaray system is the first of a new Advanced Technology Series to be crafted by the supplier. Incorporating features and design elements from the firm's home and professional audio systems - including proprietary Bose digital signal processing -- it also uses an array of 34 strategically placed speakers to deliver what Cadillac promises will be "unprecedented performance in a car."
"We asked Bose to create something truly special for this new vehicle: an unbounded sound system, providing an audio experience unmatched in any other luxury automobile," said Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer. "Cadillac CT6 customers will be elated by what they hear and feel when they switch on the Bose Panaray system."
