2016 BMW X4 M40i revealed -- attitude rich and 355-horsepower strong
Featuring the character and capability you'd expect to find in an M Performance-prepped model, the 2016 BMW X4 M40i is set to roll into showrooms early next year as the new range-topping iteration of the automaker's compact Sport Activity Coupe line. With its bolder looks, enhanced feature set, revised chassis tuning and a hot new version of the X4 xDrive35i's 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-6, the M40i raises its benchmarks across the board.
Styled for speed
Displaying the latest take on M Performance design themes, new X4 M40i boosts its curbside appeal with edgier fascia treatments. Up front, Ferric Gray Metallic accents appear on the grille and outboard air intakes as well as the side mirror housings while the rear features a unique lower diffuser framed by Black Chrome outlets on the sport exhaust system. The M40i's standard 19-inch light alloy wheels can be upgraded to 20-inch M-spec alternatives with a two-tone Ferric Grey/polished finish. Doing so also swaps the basic all-season or performance run-flat tires for wider, lower-profile and super-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber.
Quick, fast and fun
Cranking up the performance a notch, the new M40i is fitted with an upgraded version of the N55 3.0-liter inline-6 found in the standard X4. Making its first-ever appearance in any BMW, this revamped variant is the most potent M Performance gasoline engine to date, developing 355 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque, compared to the 300/300 stats of the engine in the xDrive35i. That extra muscle gets fed to a paddle-shiftable 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission with Launch Control and on to a rear-biased xDrive AWD system - both also with unique M Performance tuning - that allow the M40i to sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 150 mph top speed. The M40i's chassis benefits from a similarly focused revamp, with a bounty of M Performance tweaks to the steering and Dynamic Damper Control variable suspension, in addition to bigger brakes.
Inside, the X4 M40i cabin reflects the same fast-track philosophy, starting with sport seats trimmed in one of six different colors of premium Nevada Leather. Other distinctive touches include an M leather-wrapped steering wheel, unique instrument cluster graphics, Comfort Access keyless entry and M40i door sill plates. BMW's Intelligent Emergency Call is also included, a system that can automatically make contact with the vehicle and pinpoint its location in case of a crash. Like other X4 models, the M40i also offers BMW's full range of ConnectedDrive services/apps, navigation and a Technology Package. It will arrive in showrooms next month and have a starting price of $58,795.
