In order to gather real-world information on the passenger and cargo capacity of our long-term 2016 Acura MDX, my visiting cousins and their luggage were employed as test subjects. These three adult cousins who hail from Costa Rica are small, slight people. Fitting all three of them, a father, mother and adult daughter into the second row was easy. They enjoyed the ample 36.6 inches of legroom and 38.3 inches of headroom and although 57.8-inches of hip room is snug for three, it’s not uncomfortable.

On one particular outing we used all seven seats. In the third row, which only offers 27.4 inches of leg space, 35.6 inches of headroom and 40.6 inches of hip room, I placed the smaller of the adults, one being my diminutive mother and the other my younger cousin. Gaining access to the back row was as simple as pushing a button which folds the second-row seats and slides them forward allowing for easy entry. Exiting is just a matter of pushing buttons located high on the second row seatback and stepping out of the vehicle.

Plenty of cargo space

The Acura MDX boasts an EPA passenger volume of 132.3 cubic feet, while cargo space behind the second row is a spacious 38.4 cubic feet. Even if the third row is up and in use there’s still 15.0 cubic feet of space behind. Compared with the Audi Q7, which offers 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and the BMW X5 with 22.9 cubic feet, the MDX is more cavernous. The additional capacity of the MDX was needed on the return trip to the airport due to the extra luggage that suddenly appeared. When my relatives arrived they had two large pieces of luggage plus a small carry-on and two small purses. For the return trip that load grew to five pieces of luggage, one ridiculously over-stuffed backpack that would not pass as a carry-on, plus two large totes. All of this fit easily in the cargo area with room to spare.

Driving the 2016 Acura MDX with a full complement of passengers and cargo was effortless, handling the same if there were only one or two passengers aboard. The only one thing to note is that since the second row seat cushions sit higher than the front it was sometimes difficult to see through the rearview mirror a situation remedied by having have the smallest of the three passengers sit in the middle.

Whether hauling people or lots of luggage, the MDX offers enough cargo capacity to carry everything with ease. Check back soon for more about our long-term 2016 Acura MDX.
